The Appalachian Home Builder's Association

Jeff Howard, first president of Appalachian Home Builders Association, said the group of tri-county builders has set goals for high standards.

We've all heard newcomers to the area grumble that they can't find a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter. And when the newcomer finds a tradesman, he doesn't show up at the appointed time.

But members of the tri-county group want to change the exasperation that can come with moving into the area.

The group is called Appalachian Home Builders Association (AHBA). Its builder members are licensed contractors. Associate members such as home planners, bankers, carpenters, and flooring installers do not have to have a contractor's license to join.

Members have the opportunity to network with each other at meetings.

There are also informative presentations to keep us up to date with building concerns.

AHBA is open to members from Cherokee, Graham, and Clay conties, said AHBA President Jeff Howard.

Our organization is a self-governing body that sets a level of excellence for our members. We want others to look to our organization to set the standard.

AHBA has several goals. One of them is to have a better working relationship with real estate agents and bank officers, so they will feel confident reccomending a member of AHBA for everything from constructing a new home to tiling a bathroom floor.

"We want to clean up our industry so when people come in [new residents] we will have a pool of builders they can trust," said Howard. "We're not perfect. We make mistakes, but we want to set high standards."

Howard said there is tremendous growth in the tri-counties and with the growth comes the realization that more people are needed in the building trades. That leads to another of AHBA's goals- to attract young people into construction and to work to increase additional training for prospective tradesmen.

AHBA hopes to work with schools and particularly with Tri-County Community College to provide classes in the trades. TCCC does offer some trade classes.

AHBA also wants to be a good neighbor and to that end, is involved in community projects. Howard mentioned World Changers, groups of young people who paint and repair homes belonging to the elderly or others who need help. He said if AHBA members are unable to actually work on such projects, they can help by donating materials.

AHBA is a chartered member of the National Association of Home Builders.
