A small home for a small budget with passive solar

This couple had a very nice lot in a valley, with a view of a beautiful creek nearby, and the mountains in the distance. Their budget was extremely tight, so I needed to design a home that was very compact.

To help them reduce the expenses, I suggested a passive solar design.

The drawing on the left shows the view from the street. The drawing on the right shows the glass facing the view and the south for passive solar heating. The shape of this small house, with the glass section in the middle bumping out, creates a spacious feeling inside. The covered porch also faces south, making it a nice, comfortable area to enjoy the outside in the winter. The house blocks the cold north wind, allowing the sunshine to warm up the porch. The home had to be designed to be up off the ground because the property is in a flood zone.
